Semiconductor chips aren’t just the “brains” of our computers and smart phones. A different variety of chip, called power semiconductors, transform, route and manage the energy that powers our gadgets and are equally as important. Making them faster and more efficient is just as critical to enabling next generation technologies as improving processor speed.
Over a hundred years ago, the English economist William Stanley Jevons keenly observed that technological advances that increase energy efficiency leads to further increased energy consumption and not the other way around. In this talk, Prof. Giri reviews Jevons' observations and links it to present ones. The talk was given in September 2023 as part of the Wisconsin Energy Institute's Sustainable Energy series.

Professor Daniel Ludois and PhD student Shiying Wang received the award for Best Oral Presentation Paper in Emerging Technology for IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) 2023. The award was announced at the IEEE ECCE in Nashville, TN in November.
