This year’s WEMPEC Annual Review Meeting boasted an attendee list of over 100 sponsor representatives and many UW-Madison students and visiting scholars, making it one of the most successful meetings to date. The meeting kicked off on Tuesday, May 20th with welcome remarks from Paul Peercy, Dean of the College of Engineering and Parmesh Ramanathan, Electrical & Computer Engineering Chair. Following the welcome, Professor Robert Lorenz gave an update on the latest developments in WEMPEC’s education and research opportunities. Following Professor Lorenz’s presentation, Craig Christianson spoke about technology licensing.

     The majority of the meeting’s first day was devoted to the technical presentations given by UW-Madison’s hard-working engineers. Micah Erikson, Natee Limsuwan, Neal Clements, Patrick Schneider, Jagadeesh Tangudu, Matthew Burton, Jennifer Vining, and Adam Hughes were this year’s presenters. These presenters had the opportunity to display their areas of research, ranging from microgrids to winlunchd turbines. After these presentations, the attendees went to the labs for poster presentations and lab demonstrations given by the WEMPEC students and visiting scholars. After the presentations and demos, attendees enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks courtesy of WARF. This social hour was a chance for discussions between sponsor representatives and UW students and visitors, helping to strengthen the relationships between UW associates and the sponsors that aid in their research.

     Thursday, May 21st, consisted mostly of faculty tutorials. Professor Lipo presented on “Stationary Frame Current Regulation,” Professor Venkataramanan presented on “Switched Capacitor DC/DC Converters,” Professor Jahns presented on “Review of Electrical Loss Components in PM Synchronous Machines,” and Professor Lorenz presented on “Different Forms of Self-Sensing.” After the tutorials, another session of poster presentations concluded the day.
